A day in SG 04: At the Marina

I wanted to continue on the blow-by-blow account of my day at Singapore, but I also kind of wanted to fast track it a little just to end the series. Taking off from Little India I headed to Orchard Road, Singapore’s famous shopping district to beat the afternoon heat. I checked out Kinokonuya Bookstore to pass time and later, ate one of those Waffle Ice Creams at the streets.

Walking along Orchard Road
About mid-afternoon I took the MRT back to Clark Quay MRT and walked along the river and headed to Marina Bay before the sun sets. I passed by Cavenagh Bridge near Fullerton Hotel. I think I took a long turn at a nearby mall to pass by Collyer Quay road since I didn’t notice the stairs on my right going under the Esplanade Bridge.

Fullerton Hotel and Cavenagh Bridge
Anyways, it’s still good I managed to walk along the pier and I was frantically looking for the famous Merlion Statue along the bay. To my disappointment I found him covered up and under maintenance or cleaning. I stayed under its shadows for a while enjoying the breeze and the view, later I checked out the souvenir stalls and later along the bridge taking pictures of the Esplanade.

The hidden Merlion
I decided to pass time under the bridge and ordered a $5 SGD Milo Shake so I could sit at one of the tables there and pulled out my book “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (Vintage Contemporaries)” while waiting for twilight. I also remember receiving an SMS from a friend of mine who’s currently working in India and she told us the she’s off to a lonely planet for a few weeks up in the Himalayas of India where the weather is a bit cooler than the usual.

The Esplanade at Twilight
As soon as the twilight sky is dark enough to my liking, I finished my Milo Shake and headed to the platform to take pictures while the light conditions are good. I headed to the Esplanade for a closer night shot view and came across a photographer doing a shoot for a wedding couple. Passing them by, I headed down the back of the Esplanade where two of my friends were waiting for me fresh out from their offices.

Hokkien Prawn Noodle
There were a line of hawker stalls there which are said to be the best stalls Singapore has to offer. My two gracious hosts insisted on treating me for dinner so we each ordered Hokkien Prawn noodles, some chilli wings for the group and I had a green apple shake as my drink. The noodle was really spicy and the serving was quite large I almost wasn’t able to finish it, still it was tasty.

Chilli Wings and Green Apple Shake
To cap it all off I enjoyed my 1 day side-trip tour in the city. Many thanks to my friend for taking me in for a few days. Hopefully when I get back here I could visit the other parts of Singapore.

hey ferdz, if you continue walking from the cavenaugh bridge near fullerton hotel, and follow the river upstream, there’s a nice view there — Boat Quay. Really neat houses beside the riverbank of the singapore river. check it out.
There’s also nice chinese structures in and around Chinatown. just take the purple MRT train, hop out at Chinatown station — take the Pagoda St Exit into Chinatown.
