The Olympus e-420: World’s smallest and lightest DSLR

Olympus e-420 with Zuiko 14-42mm ED Kit Lens

Olympus Philippines was kind enough to lend me one of the latest model from Olympus DSLR line for testing and review, the Olympus e-420. The Olympus e-420 is currently the world’s smallest and lightest DSLR in the market. I was really attracted to this little wonder and wanted to really test out the unit before actually jumping into buying one. Olympus was famous for creating the OM-system cameras in the 70’s and 80’s which was also known for being small and light yet still manages to bring out the excellent quality images. A lot were excited with the release of the e-420 as it brought back the retro style cameras and also introduced the highly anticipated Zuiko 25mm 2.8 pancacke lens. I have been using a production unit for more than a week now and here are my initial impressions.

DIY Dry Box

My do-it-yourself Dry Box

Just giving in to some queries about my DIY Dry Box I posted here at my Photography Gear Setup. I guess with the onset of the rainy season, for a tropical country like us, a lot of photographers are keen in protecting their gears from humidity and moist. Moist inside your lens and camera body, left alone can damage your gear either with fungus, even rust. Especially now with the rains, there will be a time that our gears will remain longer in the storage than usual. So here’s a detailed look on how I built my DIY Dry Box.

Living By Water Opening Night

Living by Water Poster

I never really expected to have an exhibit. But when opportunity comes knocking at your door, you have to be ready to accept and act on it. So I did. When Alcove Perspective, opened themselves for exhibit proposals early this year, I sent 5 4R photos samples and a concept proposal. In truth I was just trying my luck. With a lot of great photographers out there, I thought that I may have a slim chance on passing through their screening committee, but I just had to try or I may regret not having. Besides, I got nothing to loose as well. A couple of days later, I got an email that my exhibit proposal was accepted. I was ecstatic. I mean, who would have thought.

Nokia N82 Field Test

Nokia N82 5 megapixel camera phone with Xenon Flash

Who said the megapixel race is only for Digital SLRs? Right now mobile phone manufacturers are also into their megapixel race on their camera dedicated phones. Though I always argue that bigger megapixel isn’t really that big of a deal in real world use, I guess it’s comforting to know that you have a crop option when you have more resolution available. Recently, Nokia Philippines was kind enough to loan a few select photobloggers to to test, use and experience their latest 5 megapixel Camera Phone, Nokia N82 with built-in Xenon Flash.

Photo World Asia 2008

Photoworld Asia 2008 at the Glorietta Activity Center

If in the USA, they have the Photo Marketing Association Trade Show which the world of Photography seems to follow as most photo companies exhibit and reveal their newer models. Here in the Philippines, we have the Photo World Asia. Before, it was called Photo World Manila, I guess for marketing reasons the popped in the “Asia” to make it wider in scope but it really isn’t that wide a coverage. Photo World is also an annual event held usually early February in Glorietta Activity Center, Makati. This year, the event is held from January 31 – February 5. Most local photo distributors have their exhibit booths and most retailers give good discounts and freebies during this event, making it an ideal time to buy new cameras and accessories.
