Nobody needs an excuse to go to the Caribbean. Let’s face it, if you were handed an all-expenses-paid ticket to a sun-drenched Caribbean island, with all the powder-soft sands and bath-warm waters you could ask for, who could possibly say no? The only difficulty you might face is deciding which island to go to. And if that’s a dilemma you need a helping hand with, look no further.

The Dominican Republic is a beautiful island and the second largest in the Caribbean, so as you can imagine there’s plenty of diversity on offer. It’s got sun, sea and sand by the bucketload, and more than its fair share of sultry Latin beats too.

If it’s a classic Caribbean beach break you’re after, the Dominican Republic certainly won’t disappoint. It’s home to long ribbons of porcelain-white sands that melt into azure seas. Palm trees, cloudless blue skies, mountainous backdrops, first-rate hotels – it’s all here, and you can be sure of an incredible beach-side experience whichever area you stay in.

As for price, the Dominican Republic isn’t exactly famed for cheap holidays but you can still snap up a sizzling bargain by booking a late deal, or by looking for early bird bookings on next year’s getaways. Cheap holidays or not, a visit to the Dominican Republic is worth its weight in gold, and it’s well worth forking out a little extra for.

Aside from the beach, the island has a rich heritage. Explore archaeological sites such as the historic San Felipe Fortress, or head out by boat to explore the desert-island style castaways of Catalina and Saona. If you fancy something a little more strenuous, experience the majestic mountains of the island’s interior – you can tackle Mount Isabel del Torres or take the more sensible route to the summit by cable car.
