Puerto Princesa Underground River

Palawan was firmly placed on the global map when the Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR) earned its “Triple Crown” of recognition: inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, officially declared one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature in 2012, and designated a Ramsar Site (a wetland of international importance) that same year.

I have been fascinated by this cave system since it was known as the St. Paul’s Underground River—back when the Lonely Planet print guide was the ultimate travel bible. Having visited in 2010 and 2015, I recently had the pleasure of returning, courtesy of the Tourism Promotions Board and the Palawan Tourism Council. It was a wonderful opportunity to see how Sabang has evolved over the last decade into a premier ecotourism hub.

The Puerto Princesa Underground River

While the name has changed since my first visit, the core experience remains a geological marvel. Located within the St. Paul Mountain Range, the river features 8.2 km of navigable water, though only 1.5 km is accessible via the standard 45-minute guided tour.

Audio Guide device

The most significant update for me was the introduction of the Audio Guide. In the past, the quality of the experience relied entirely on your boatman’s storytelling. Now, with high-quality audio available in multiple languages (including Filipino), the information is standardized and consistent. The tour has become a quiet, meditative cruise through the chambers, where beams of light reveal ancient limestone formations.

Pro Tip: PPUR enforces a strict “No Permit, No Entry” policy with a 900-pax daily capacity. It is essential to book in advance via the Official Facebook Page or an accredited agency.

Sabang X Zipline

For those craving an adrenaline hit after the stillness of the cave, the Sabang X Zipline is nearby. The journey involves a quick raft across the river, a stroll along Manlipien Beach, and a 15–20 minute forest hike to the launch point.

Hike to the launching point

The zipline stretches 800 meters and launches from a height of 150 feet. While the height is manageable, the sensation of “flying” directly over the turquoise sea is absolutely exhilarating.

Mangrove Paddle Boat Tour

As a contrast to the cave, the Mangrove Tour offers bright, open serenity. This slow, educational tour showcases the “green lungs” of the coast. As you paddle through the narrow channels, keep your eyes peeled for mangrove snakes, monitor lizards, and vibrant kingfishers.

The experience lasts about 60 to 90 minutes (including the walk and briefing) and ends with the optional “Tamilok” (woodworm) tasting—a must-try Palawan delicacy!

What to Pack (The Essentials)

  • Footwear: Aqua shoes or trekking sandals (best for boat transfers and the zipline hike).
  • Dry Bag: To protect your phone and camera from sea spray and cave drips.
  • Protection: Reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent, and a hat.
  • Clothing: Quick-dry clothes and a light jacket for the air-conditioned van ride.
  • Cash: No ATMs in Sabang; bring extra for tips, snacks, and Tamilok.

Note: Keep food inside your bags. The local monkeys are clever and will grab any plastic bags they see!
